The general tax credit is a discount on your income tax and national insurance premiums. Anyone who works in the Netherlands is obliged to hand over part of his or her salary to the government in the form of payroll tax. After withholding this levy and any other levies, such as pension contributions, the net salary remains. Wage tax is deducted from salary, holiday pay, overtime, a thirteenth month and company car. Travel expenses, study costs and meals are free of payroll taxes.

An employee may choose not to apply the payroll tax credit. In that case, the net salary is low, but the employee then receives the total sum of the wage tax credit at once during the annual tax return. It may also be that an employee has payroll taxes applied to two ‘employers’. We often see that in addition to a salary, an employee also receives a (partial) benefit from the UWV, for example. A benefit is also seen as wages and an employee therefore pays tax on it.
