6 tips for a sustainable workplace
A sustainable workplace is not a difficult task!
The consequences of climate change are enormous. For example, there is a good chance that there will be no ice at all at the North Pole by 2050 and we will face more natural disasters. It is therefore more important than ever to become more sustainable now. And that doesn't have to be difficult! Making yourself more sustainable does not always mean sacrificing comfort. In this blog we give you 6 tips for a sustainable workplace!
1. Give sustainable gifts
Do you want to put your employees in the spotlight? Are you looking for an original Christmas package or would you like to put a special customer in the spotlight? You may not immediately think about it, but you have countless options when it comes to sustainable promotional gifts. On the internet you will find creative and useful gifts that are environmentally friendly. You can think of fair trade drinks boxes, erasable notebooks, printed thermoflasses and much more! Do you want to take a completely different tack? Then you can also do a piece buy tropical rainforest and give this gift. How cool is that!
2. Choose a vegetarian lunch (more often)
People still often believe that vegetarian food is not tasty or healthy. But the opposite is true! In the supermarkets you will find more and more meat substitutes that can hardly be distinguished from the real thing. Nowadays, every animal product can be replaced by a sustainable and animal-friendly alternative. By choosing a vegetarian lunch at work you not only save a lot of animal suffering, but also a lot of CO2 emissions. Did you know that 4 kilos of beef equals a car ride from Maastricht to Paris? So you already make a big difference when you skip meat! And if you want to make an even bigger difference, you can opt for a plant-based meal.
3. Leave the car
Traveling to work by walking or cycling is of course the ideal image. But not everyone lives close to work and then the car is quickly caught. The car is a major culprit when it comes to CO2 emissions. Choose public transport or set up a carpool with a group of colleagues. Driving to work has never been so fun! And can you also do your work from home? Suggest to your employer to include one (or more) working from home day (s). Not only does it save you travel time, but you also reduce your ecological footprint!
4. Plants, plants and more plants
Your working environment looks a lot nicer with attractive plants. They also provide clean and fresh air. These plants obviously need water. In a rainy country, such as the Netherlands, we have no shortage of water. Catch rainwater in buckets and water the plants with it. Your office or workshop becomes such a natural environment that even Freek Vonk would be jealous. ;)
5. Can we go thrift shopping?
A new Christmas tree or a mirror on the wall? You can easily buy them new in the store or online. But why spend a lot of money on new items when the cycle is bursting with second-hand items that often look like new? Believe us, there are real gems among them! And do you no longer use something at work? Then take that to the cycle yourself. What is no longer essential to you can be very useful for someone else. So give your (office) items a second life!
6. Turn off equipment if you don't use it
You save a lot of power by turning off devices when they are not in use. For example, do you leave your computer screen on standby or do lights burn in empty spaces? All superfluous! It is not only your energy bill that decreases if you take your power consumption into account. The lifespan of the devices on the work floor is also extended. For example, the printer lasts longer and is less likely to need to be replaced! Saves not only money, but also mountains of waste.
Curious about what we do to contribute to the world?
At our office you will not find meat in the refrigerator and we wear thick sweaters in winter, so that the heating does not have to work overtime. We also support two animal shelters that we would like to tell you more about!
